Three Characteristics of a Good Helper

1. Honesty – Can you trust them?

When someone is trusted, you can count on him or her to do what he or she agrees to. If they are scheduled within a time window, they show up at the right time or call with a time that they can be there and ask if the new time will be okay. If they damage something they quickly let you know and offer a way to make it right. They leave your stuff and take only their stuff.

2. Committed to excellence - Do you have to point out errors or redo their work?

When someone is committed to excellence they will take the time necessary to do the project well. They will come up with innovative ways to make the work flow better and get better results. They are happy when the day is done knowing that they did their best.

3. Caring - Do they care about you or the organization?

They get enough sleep and are free of emotional baggage. They choose to serve your organization over a personal to do list. They are there when you need them.

“When a person shows you who they are, believe them.” Oprah

Helpers who do not have these three characteristics will make it difficult to provide the service that customers have a right to expect. I think that Oprah is right; when a helper fails in one or more of these characteristics it is best to find someone else to help you. I’ve noticed that people move away from people who demonstrate lack in any of these three areas. When you really like someone they probably strongly demonstrate all three of these characteristics.
